Introducing Ahmed
My name is Ahmed and I am from Somalia, living in Garowe, Puntland State. I graduated from the University of Bosaso with two Bachelor’s degrees—one in Health Science, specializing in Nutrition and Food Science, and another in Information Communication Technology. For the past five years, I have worked in higher education, particularly at the University of Bosaso – Garowe, in the office of Academics.
Despite my academic background, I had never studied a humanitarian course during my career. On July 1, I made the bold decision to leave my job at the University of Bosaso – Garowe, aiming to embrace a new challenge and develop my skills further. This led me to register for the Humanitarian Leadership Academy through Kaya Connect, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in my professional journey.
The start of Ahmed’s learning journey
My journey truly began on November 2, 2024, when I registered for the Humanitarian Leadership Academy’s digital learning platform Kaya. I remember feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation as I took this significant step toward enhancing my understanding of humanitarian work. The Academy’s commitment to developing leaders in the humanitarian sector resonated deeply with my aspirations.
Expanding knowledge with Kaya
Throughout my time learning with Kaya, I immersed myself in a variety of courses, each one contributing uniquely to my growth. The highlights include:
- Education in Emergencies (EiE): This course highlighted the critical role of education in crises, providing me with insights into how to support affected communities effectively.
- Collecting Data for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities: I learned how to gather and analyze data to ensure that vulnerable populations are included in humanitarian efforts.
- Child Protection and Education: Understanding how to safeguard children in emergencies became a vital part of my skill set.
- NRC Humanitarian Access: I gained practical knowledge on navigating access challenges in humanitarian settings.
- Project Management: This training sharpened my skills in managing projects efficiently, ensuring successful outcomes.
- Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) – the Fundamentals: I learned about innovative assistance methods that empower communities economically.
- Fundamentals of Immigration Detention: This training provided insights into the humanitarian implications of immigration systems.
- Safeguarding Essentials: I reinforced my understanding of safeguarding practices critical in humanitarian contexts.
Each certificate I earned was not just a milestone; it represented a deeper commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need.
Putting knowledge into practice: securing a role in the humanitarian sector
My journey took a significant turn when a job was advertised by KAALO Aid and Development for the position of Registration Assistant in Puntland, in partnership with UNHCR. I applied for the role and was thrilled to find myself shortlisted among the candidates. After successfully completing an exam, I became one of the finalists for this position.
Following this, I traveled to Galkayo for a training program at the UNHCR Somalia Sub-office. I participated in a six-day training focused on the Registration and Verification Exercise. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I had gained from the Humanitarian Leadership Academy in a practical setting. The training was emphasized especially in the Humanitarian Code of Conduct and Social Protection.

During training I successfully registered as a UNHCR Operator for the Registration and Verification Exercise, enabling me to contribute directly to humanitarian efforts. This role not only validated my skills but also reaffirmed my passion for humanitarian work.
Ahmed’s closing reflections
My experience with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy’s Kaya learning platform has been nothing short of transformative. The knowledge and skills I gained have empowered me to pursue my passion and make a meaningful impact in the humanitarian sector. I am excited for what the future holds and am committed to continuing my journey of learning and service.
