Learner spotlight: meet Bikila

“In my quest for knowledge as a lifelong learner, I’ve enjoyed completing over 125 courses in 2024 on Kaya!” – Bikila

Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Bikila Tesfaye, and I am proud to be from Ethiopia. From a young age, I have been dedicated to the humanitarian sector.

After obtaining my (M.A.) in Sociology from Jimma University, I began my career at RaDO (Rehabilitation and Development Organization) in Ethiopia’s oldest refugee camp, Pinyudo, as an Assistant Rehabilitation Officer. I now hold the position of Youth Training Facilitator (YTF) at a Development Expertise Center (DEC) Kefeta Project, where I strive to create a lasting impact in the community.

What are your top three courses on Kaya?

I have completed 125 courses on Kaya, with my favorites being Collecting Data for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action, Gender-Based Violence Information Management System, and Helping Older People in Emergencies.

You were awarded your HPass Learner of the Year badge (in 2023) – Congrats! What inspired or motivated you with your learning?

Receiving the HPass Learner of the Year badge is a tremendous honor. I am proud to have earned both my HPass Community Champion and Learner of the Year badges. I participated in the HPass Learner of the Year 2023 challenge and successfully met the requirements for Gold Medalist. I feel highly inspired and motivated while obtaining my badges and sharing my accomplishments with my networks.

My motivation for learning comes from a deep commitment to making a positive impact in the humanitarian sector. Each course and certification I pursued has not only enhanced my knowledge but also equipped me with practical skills to address real-world challenges.

The desire to support vulnerable communities and empower individuals drives my passion for continuous learning. Additionally, the support from mentors and peers, along with the recognition of my efforts through awards and badges, has further fueled my determination to grow and contribute meaningfully to the field.

Has your learning changed your outlook or approach to your humanitarian work?

Absolutely. My learning experiences have profoundly changed my outlook and approach to humanitarian work. Through various courses and certifications, I have gained a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of humanitarian issues.

This knowledge has equipped me with innovative strategies for problem-solving and has reinforced the importance of empathy and cultural sensitivity in my interactions with communities. I now approach my work with a more holistic perspective, prioritizing collaboration and sustainable solutions that empower individuals rather than just providing immediate relief. Overall, my learning has transformed my approach into one that is more informed, compassionate, and focused on long-term impact.

Bikila’s passion for learning shines through in this interview, a passion we know resonates across our HLA and Kaya Community. We are innovating more ways to encourage, and motivate learning across the sector. Be on the look out for more content aimed to inspire and motivate you on your learning journey!
